POSITION TITLE:               Bilingual Family Support Specialist

REPORTS TO:                    Healthy Families Program Supervisor

OVERVIEW:  Family Focus’ mission is to promote the well-being of children from birth by supporting and strengthening their families as individual units and within their communities.  We are committed to ensuring our centers provide exemplary services with innovative programs and that family support principles are integrated into every aspect of the work.

POSITION SUMMARY:  The Family Support Specialist is responsible for initiating and maintaining regular (at least weekly) and long-term (up to five years) contact/support with families.  The Family Support Specialist will provide community outreach and education activities primarily within the family’s home and be intensive (each visit lasting for at least one hour.)  The Family Support Specialist will conduct family-centered and strength–based interventions directed at establishing a trusting relationship.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform initial assessment of family.
  • Assist family in strengthening the parent-child relationship by incorporating strength- based model.  Suggests parent child interactions accordingly.
  • Assist family in establishing goals and a plan for accomplishment of those goals, as well as the assessment of the normal growth and development of the target child.
  • Assist parents in improving skills to optimize the home environment.
  • Help families to improve support system.
  • Increase family’s ability to problem solve and advocate for themselves and their children.
  • Identify and refer family for contact/appointments at other supportive agencies, including health care appointments.
  • Track immunizations.
  • Organize opportunities for parents to meet on a monthly basis for socialization, education, and support.
  • Conduct/Monitor development screenings.
  • Provides intervention with appropriate developmental activities necessary to address developmental and parenting deficits.
  • Monitors the well being of the children in the home and reports and concerns to the immediate supervisor.
  • Documents contacts with the family members, or on behalf of family members.
  • Input services into database system, collect and store weekly hard copy files for audit purposes.
  • Completes required forms and reports in a timely manner.
  • Attends relevant lectures, courses, workshops, training courses and conferences to further professional growth, as approved by supervisor.
  • Participate in the on-going development and related activities of a comprehensive quality improvement process within the Child and Family Services division.
  • Performs other relevant duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Maintains records and statistics required by the agency, state and other funding sources and makes suggestions for revision or review.
  • Completes paperwork and projects within established time frames.
  • Contributes to program evaluation, makes recommendations for changes as needs arise.
  • Participates in public speaking as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA/BS in early childhood, social services, or related field.  Non BA with extensive experience in home visiting program considered. 
  • Must write and speak fluent Spanish.
  • Two years paid or volunteer experience working with families and children.
  • Ability to speak the primarily language of the clients they are working with.
  • Maturity and experience in successfully working with children (0-5 years of age) and their families.
  • Knowledge of normal child growth/development and parent-child relationships.
  • Ability to relate to families from a strength-based model even in an apparently chaotic family environment; ability to approach families from a family-centered service model.
  • Available to families after-hours on an emergency basis.
  • Non-judgmental.
  • Creative and knowledgeable about community resources.
  • Enjoys and functions appropriately with long-term, ongoing projects; doesn’t need immediate feedback or results for personal validation.
  • Ability to establish and maintain personal/programmatic boundaries, while providing supportive services.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to relate to individuals who may not share basic commonality, including value system and behavior norms.
  • Believes in and is comfortable with advocating for nurturing, nonviolent discipline of children.
  • Experience in working with culturally diverse communities and families with the ability to be culturally sensitive and appropriate.
